The Sheffield Green Belt Consultation Is Live
The Council have now released the document regarding the Sheffield Plan, which details the proposed additional green belt site allocations for development of housing and commercial units. Local green belt campaigns are currently pulling together information on how best you can raise your voice. They advise it is better to take the time to provide detailed arguements to object to green belt development in Sheffield - rather than rushing to respond.
Sheffield’s Green Belt Is Under Threat – And Locals Are Fighting Back
On 14 May 2025, campaigners gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall to protest plans to build on 14 Green Belt sites across the city. Inside, councillors were voting to move forward with the proposals as part of Sheffield’s Local Plan – a long-term strategy for how the city will grow over the next 10 years and beyond.

Since the Local Plan was first shared, thousands of Sheffield residents have come together to voice their opposition. The plan puts Sheffield’s Green Belt at serious risk and threatens the character and nature of communities.

At the heart of the issue is the loss of protected green spaces. The Local Plan includes proposals to remove around 800 acres of Green Belt land, making way for housing and commercial developments. Local campaigners worry this will lead to more traffic, pressure on local services, and the permanent loss of wildlife and countryside that people value for walking and wellbeing.

The plan includes 3,539 new homes, along with schools, cemeteries, and employment units, on 14 Green Belt sites across the city. The majority of Sheffield's green belt sites which have been given the go-ahead are in the S35 and S13 postcodes, with additional sites in S10 and S17.
